QUEENS LOCAL NEWS - A suspect has been charged with attacking three commuters during a stabbing spree inside a Queens subway station. Originally it was believed only two victims were attacked.

Tyquan Manassa, 27, has been arraigned following a frightening, unprovoked attack on commuters at the Union Turnpike–Kew Gardens subway station last Wednesday. Two  people were slashed in the face while simply waiting for their train, shaking riders and prompting a swift police investigation.

“This random violence is every commuter’s worst nightmare,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “As alleged, two victims were simply waiting for the train in Kew Gardens when this defendant approached them and – without provocation – slashed them both in the face. I thank the brave good Samaritans who rushed to aid their fellow commuters and the police who quickly apprehended this defendant.”

Manassa, who lives on Charles Gay Loop in Manhattan, was arraigned late Thursday night on a long list of charges: four counts of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault, and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Queens Criminal Court Judge Anthony Battisti ordered him back to court on November 25. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, the attacks unfolded quickly on the afternoon of November 19, between 3:10 and 3:25 p.m. Manassa—dressed in a black jacket, black pants, and gray sneakers—approached a man standing on the E and F train platform and struck him repeatedly with a sharp object, cutting his forehead and ear.

Police say he then walked off and slapped another bystander across the face before approaching a third man and allegedly slashing him in the eyebrow with a knife. After the attacks, he fled the station.

The first victim needed 16 stitches, while the second stabbing victim received seven. The bystander who was slapped was not reported to have required medical treatment.

Manassa was later arrested on Friday at criminal court in Manhattan, bringing a quick end to what had become a disturbing case for subway riders across the borough.
