QUEENS, NY — The New York City Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying an individual wanted in connection with a Grand Larceny of an Auto in Queens, following a troubling incident that occurred earlier this month within the confines of the 108 Precinct.

According to police, the incident took place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at approximately 7:13 p.m., near the intersection of 44 Drive and 23 Street in Queens. Investigators say a 34-year-old man had parked his 2016 Subaru outside a commercial establishment with the engine still running, leaving a 72-year-old male passenger seated in the backseat while he briefly went inside.

During that short window, an unidentified individual allegedly entered the unattended vehicle and drove away, taking both the car and the elderly passenger with him. The incident has been classified by the NYPD as a Grand Larceny Auto theft, a serious felony under New York State law.

Vehicle and Passenger Later Recovered in Queens

Police report that the stolen vehicle was later located in the vicinity of 53 Avenue and 44 Street, also within the 108 Precinct. The 72-year-old passenger was found unharmed, and authorities confirmed that no injuries were reportedas a result of the incident.

However, the suspect fled the scene to parts unknown before officers arrived, prompting an ongoing investigation and a public appeal for information.

The NYPD has released media images of the individual they are seeking to identify and is urging anyone who may recognize the suspect or have information about the incident to come forward.

The incident has raised concerns among Queens residents, particularly regarding leaving vehicles unattended while running, even for brief periods. Police continue to remind the public to always turn off engines, remove keys, and secure vehicles — especially in busy commercial areas.

The investigation remains active, and detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras in the area.
