QUEENS, NY - A Queens man has been arrested and charged in connection with a serious auto theft incident that occurred last month within the confines of the 108 Precinct, the NYPD announced.

According to police, Dominic Kanin, a 30-year-old male was taken into custody following an ongoing investigation.

Kanin is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including grand larceny, kidnapping, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and unlawful imprisonment, NYPD officials confirmed.

The arrest stems from an incident reported on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in the vicinity of 44 Drive and 23 Street in Long Island City, within the 108 Precinct.

Police say a 34-year-old male victim had parked his 2016 Subaru with the engine idling while briefly entering a nearby commercial establishment. At the time, a 72-year-old male passenger remained seated in the rear of the vehicle.

While the vehicle was unattended, an unidentified individual allegedly entered the Subaru and drove away, unknowingly—or knowingly—with the elderly passenger still inside.

Shortly after the theft was reported, officers located the stolen vehicle in the vicinity of 53 Avenue and 44 Street, also within the confines of the 108 Precinct.

The 72-year-old passenger was found inside the vehicle and was not injured, police said. The suspect fled the scene on foot and initially evaded capture.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Following continued investigative efforts, NYPD detectives identified Kanin as a suspect. His arrest on February 2 marks a significant development in the case.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding how the suspect was identified or whether additional charges may be forthcoming.

Incidents involving auto theft with occupants still inside the vehicle raise serious public safety concerns, particularly when elderly individuals are involved. NYPD officials remind drivers never to leave vehicles running and unattended, even for a short time.
