At around 6:15 pm on October 26, Steven Cohen, 63, got into an arguement with an employee inside Cross Bay Express Deli, at 137-02 Cross Bay Boulevard. Cohen, who is said to have been living inside a car parked in front of the deli, had been thrown out of the store for his behavior.
However, he returned a short time later with a Colt revolver and opened fire. One of the multiple shots fired struck and killed Tarwala Mahmadkhurshid who worked at the deli. Prosecutors say that after hitting Mahmadkhurshid, Cohen opened fire on another employee but missed.
It was then that Officer Jason Maharaj rushed the gunman, and pushed him outside the store onto the floor of the parking lot. Disarming him. Maharaj was off duty shopping in the store at the time.
“The moment after a man shot & killed a deli worker, off-duty NYPD Officer Maharaj, with out regard for his own safety, tackled the shooter, disarmed him & held him for responding cops,” Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted out.
“The incident started with a dispute and ended with the accused allegedly taking of the life of a 26-year-old man. We need to thank the off-duty police officer for his bravery and swift action, tackling and disarming the defendant, assuring that no other lives were lost. The defendant will be held accountable,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
Cohen was charged with murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree and 2 counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. If convicted, Cohen faces up 25 years-to-life in prison.
