Queens Man Charged with Butchering Mom with Meat Cleaver

A Queens man who allegedly butchered his 78-year-old mother with a meat cleaver was charged with murder. 


David Galicia, 48, was charged with second degree murder in relation to the April 24th attack. He faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison if convicted.  


Prosecutors said when police arrived to the entrance of the building Galicia shared with his mother on 41st Avenue, they discovered blood. The officers followed the bloody trail that led from the lobby to Galicia’s apartment. Inside they found 78-year-old Carmelita Cabansag dead on the kitchen floor with puncture wounds to the head. Cops recovered a blood-covered meat cleaver near the body. 


“The victim in this case should have been enjoying her golden years. Instead, her life came to a bloody and brutal end, and the accused is her own son,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “The defendant is charged with an unthinkable crime. The defendant is in custody and will be held accountable for these alleged crimes.” 


Criminal complaints and indictments are accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

At around 5:45 pm on March 12, a 26-year-old male was standing in front of 76-07 160th Street. Cops said a man in a black coat and a black face covering ran up and pulled out a gun. The gunman fired multiple rounds at the victim but missed. The gunman then ran away on in an unknown direction. However, cops recovered surveillance video of the suspect from a nearby house. Toolbox Muggers Attack Man on F Train The NYPD is searching for these men in connection with an assault and robbery of a straphanger using pliers. -Photo by NYPD By Dan Gesslein Queens Voice April 24, 2024 QUEENS - A Queens subway rider was beaten and robbed by a pair of attackers who displayed a knife and a pair of pliers, cops said.  At around 8 pm on April 20, a 20-year-old man was onboard an F Train in Queens. As the train was pulling in to the Hillside Avenue/179 Street Subway Station, two men approached the straphanger.  Cops said one of the men pulled out a knife, the other pulled out a pair of pliers. The attackers then began punching and kicking the straphanger. They also beat the man with the pliers, cops said.
